There have been many changes since President Trump resumed his 2nd term presidency in January 2025. Education and Health are on the top of the Administration’s priorities. From public health, social work, nursing no longer considered as professional degrees to Federal student Loan and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) many communities across the Nation raise their voice. The topic that catches my and my guest the most is about AI and its overuse in the current job market. I will be referring to my guest as she/her throughout the article.
She sees an over-saturation of candidates’ poll from Gen Z and Gen Alpha who have applied for jobs online. Many employers are ghosting candidates and not paying genuine attention to applications because AI is being overused. As a result, many qualified candidates don't get a chance for an interview that leads to employment. On top of this workforce problem, there are still people who are affected by Federal mass lay off, whose majority of them are Millennial and Gen X.
Because of this historical turn over, she acknowledges a great need for a safe space in communities. She recognizes so much pain in many people. Youngsters typically go for pieces of advice to older adults such as professors, teachers, and mentors but many of them do not have the answer. Perhaps, because there is no safe space for people to have a dialogue that fosters trust and understanding. She emphasized, “we have to cultivate trust”.
By the time she graduated with her degrees, she did not have to worry about a job because she was able to follow a straight career pathway. Then, a question was raised about AI during our conversation. “Is the job search engine really working or is it only a facade?”. The answer to it is complicated. President Trump is a businessman who typically does not like to see regulation. However, regulation is not always negative or restrictive. Take an example of AI. The overuse of AI by employers without good stewardship may be another factor that causes our country’s unemployment rate to rise up to 4.3% in March 2026, per Bureau Labor and Statistics. We do not want to see it back to COVID-19 Pandemic which was 14.9% - recession. That was not a good indicator of a country's economic growth. Regulation may be the answer to prevent the misuse of AI.
She thinks about connecting people to people again because even though technology helps with many administrative tasks, it does not help with cultivating connections. The question is now: “How can we connect people together? For them to feel the positive energy in the room. That is what makes things happen. Will students get employed after graduation? Will they be able to pay back the debt?”
In Public Health, the change in federal student loans have raised concerns over the workforce pipeline. A good functioning pipeline is needed in every sector because our country needs to replace those who are retiring with newer generations and retain the existing workers so the system can keep up with demands - as President Trump’s interest is to increase the number of the US population and improve health outcomes of the rural communities.
In both my and her work, we meet with community members most of the time because from those meetings, opportunities will open. She believes that some people do not have a chance to meet real people with lived experience, when they meet they will learn from each other. “Everyone is looking at the same thing (issue) to solve and from different lenses. There is not only one way to approach something. We have to have different people at the table.” That is the beauty of DEI.
Where she is at her phase in life now, she will keep doing what she loves the most because it is so gratifying. “You just have to do your part.”
